Whilst we’re still getting over the madness that was the San Diego Takeover at Roadburn this year, Petyr have been hard at work – prepping for the release of their second album.

Nestled in amongst the perhaps more familiar bands that made their way over from San Diego last month, was Petyr. Although very much wrapped up in the whole San Diego scene, this was their first trip over – as a band – to Tilburg. And boy did we put them to work! Not only did they play the Hall of Fame and the Green Room, but they also set up in the Ladybird Skatepark for yet another live jam.

A little over a year ago, Petyr caught our eye when they released their self titled debut album; influenced in equal parts by hard rock and skate culture, it was no surprise to find that home was the fertile musical ground of San Diego.  With musical cues taken not only from hometown scene godfathers, Earthless, but also the likes of psych masters Flower Travellin’ Band and perennial favourites Black SabbathPetyr were here to rip!

The follow up, a mere 12 months later, is the sound of a band truly finding their groove. Recorded at Lost Ark studio in Pacific Beach, San Diego, and titled as a skewed tribute to legendary skater, Peter Smolik, their sophomore album picks up where the debut left off.

We’re thrilled to premiere not one but two tracks from the album, Smolyk. Although they are diminutive in length, these two tracks are half of the expansive four-part album opening section. Originally envisioned to be the intro to a live Petyr set, the tracks translate well to record too; for those that caught the band at Roadburn, it should be a great throwback to remind you what this four-piece brought to the table in April.

With plans already afoot for a 7 inch to follow, Petyr may embody the laid-back, West Coast vibe, but they’re not hanging around. With their collective ear being tuned in more to heavier and faster sounds, no doubt we’ll continue to see the evolution of this young band who are ready and willing to carry the torch for the San Diego scene.

For now, line ’em up and let ’em rip!

Smolyk by Petyr is out next week via Outer Battery Records. You can pre-order it here.
