EXCLUSIVE SETS: Aaron Turner performing improvised guitar actions

Thirteen years ago we welcomed Aaron Turner to Roadburn for the first time. Back then, it was a headlining set by Isis that brought us together, and in the years since we’ve hosted the musician in many guises – most recently in 2019 in collaboration with Will Brooks and Dennis Tyfus under the banner of Doolhof, with SUMAC performing with Caspar Brötzmann, and as part of Old Man Gloom. A prolific and experimental musician, it was only a matter of time before Turner was back on our radar, with new material on the horizon.

With an appearance in Tilburg off the table for the foreseeable, we’re delighted to confirm that Turner will be making his presence felt via audio/video in a virtual realm.

He told us: “Playing music live is pure joy. I miss that experience deeply. Though hopeful for its return, I’m certainly not expecting it by any particular date. I’m also very much looking forward to playing Roadburn again – that is, the in-the-flesh-with-other-people incarnation of it. This festival has been one of the consistently best I’ve ever had the pleasure of taking part in over the years, and I appreciate being asked to participate in yet another round – albeit in incorporeal form.”

“At this moment the options for gathering together with other members of the bands in which I’m a participant is basically nil – aside from Mamiffer who may have already reached our maximum capacity for internet performances. As such I’ve chosen to do a solo set. It will consist of improvised guitar actions, and if appropriate perhaps vocals as well. The foundational ideas will be organized around themes currently in development for a solo album – a premiere of developing forms in a way. I’m looking forward to sharing these sounds, and experiencing at least a sliver of that feeling that comes from playing music for and with others. Thanks again to Roadburn for inviting me to do this, and to any potential eyes and ears that are willing to tune in.”

That as yet untitled solo album will be released later this year via Trost Records, but we’re honoured to be getting a glimpse of what’s to come as part of Roadburn Redux. No doubt there will be further instalments of the Roadburn-Turner saga in years to come where we’ll once again be united in the physical form.

Aaron Turner will perform at Roadburn Redux, between April 16-18.
