Backwash to make European debut at Roadburn 2022

The past 18 months may have had one hell of a big dark cloud hanging over it, but there were certainly slivers of joy to be found too. Rising to prominence during one of the most disruptive and discombobulating periods, Backxwash has already made an incredible impact on the music world. Fusing rap and heavy metal, her music is modern, acerbic and vital.

We have been championing Backxwash for many months now, but we weren’t the only one to be caught up by her creative socio-political commentary. Our 2022 curators, Thomas Sciarone and Milena Eva (both of Dutch avant-garde rock band, GGGOLDDD) were also bewitched by her output – not least the Polaris Prize winning album, God Has Nothing To Do With It, Leave Him Out Of It

Of the invitation they extended to Backxwash they said:

“The bright shining star of Backxwash rises quickly. And rightfully so! Her music is so moving, both in an emotional and visceral way. It’s impossible to sit still while listening to her heavy and textured beats and to remain untouched by her personal, hard hitting lyrics. Her first ever European performance is sure to blow the roof of the venue.”

Backxwash will perform twice at Roadburn 2022: one show – Here I Lay at Roadburn – will put emphasis on her latest album, I LIE HERE BURIED WITH MY RINGS AND MY DRESSES; the second show is titled Nine Hells and will dive into the back catalogue as well as offering up some fresh new material. Stay tuned for more information in the coming months.

Backxwash told us:

“I cannot wait to bring the Nine Hells to Roadburn, this is a once in a lifetime experience and is a monumental place for anyone who makes weird experimental music.”

We’re thrilled to present the European debut of Backxwash at Roadburn – to bring the full-on imaginations of Ashanti Mutina and her co-conspirator Méchant Vaporwave to the Roadburn stages in all their technicolour glory. This is the return to Roadburn we’ve been dreaming of.
