EXCLUSIVE SETS: Death Bells to bring a little vitamin D to Roadburn Redux

Death Bells brought a little bit of Australia-by-way-of-California sunshine into what was, on the whole, a pretty bleak 2020. Their album, New Signs Of Life, released via Dais Records was nine-tracks aloof, guitar and synth driven rock that couldn’t help let a little optimism shine through the brooding dark clouds.

With live performances curtailed for obvious reasons, the tracks from New Signs of Life were unable to be experienced live. Whilst we’re not quite able to work miracles, we have been gifted the premiere of an incredible live performance filmed at Bombay Beach, California.

Death BellsWill Canning told us: “In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, we felt it important to find a way to perform songs from New Signs of Life in a live context. We had previously spent some time around the Salton Sea, and found Bombay Beach in particular to have a sort of chaotic allure. It’s in a state of permanent environmental decline, harsh and alien. Our friend Sonia made sure we had a place to sleep whilst filming the performance, and has a wealth of knowledge regarding the area – having moved there as a child in the 1960s, when it was being marketed as the Californian Riviera.
“The video itself was directed and shot by Travis Waddell, who’s become a frequent collaborator. Andy Oswald and Colin Knight figured out how best to record everything live – no small feat for such an oppressive landscape.”

Director Travis Waddell adds: “Just a couple hours east of Los Angeles, Live from Bombay features Death Bells afront a tremendous environmental disaster left by the horrors of humanity. The film is a blunt homage to Pink Floyd’s “Live at Pompeii” and its exploration of tragedy in the natural world. Death Bells performance among these toxic remnants of pollution decries the follies of this modern era.”

If you need a bit of sunshine in your life – who doesn’t? – then prepare for Death Bells to bring a little vitamin D to Roadburn Redux.

Death Bells live from Bombay will be part of Roadburn Redux, April 16-18.
