Dommengang will bring their groovy, soulful trip to Roadburn 2020.

You can fake all kinds of things. From IDs and mustaches to just about whatever you can think of, but there’s no faking soul. You’ve either got it or you don’t, and it doesn’t matter what school you go to or how much reverb you put on that guitar, because if it ain’t there and you’re trying to pretend it is, you’re just gonna sound silly, like you’re forcing the word “ain’t” into a sentence instead of “isn’t.”

Dommengang have it.

And not a little of it.

They’ll bring it to Roadburn 2020.

Ahead of their appearance on the Roadburn stage, take a listen to their 2019 record No Keys that Thrill Jockey put out. First off, yeah there are some keys — guest organ on closer Happy Death (Her Blues II) — but more importantly, the L.A. by way of NYC three-piece turn rhythms on their heads whiplash fast and yet never quite want to approach the post-Earthless overthetopness of so much of the San Diego scene that was featured at Roadburn 2018.

Nothing against that, of course. But Dommengang’s trip is groovier, noddier, and while they’re working from some of the same roots in classic heavy rock, they’re putting a stamp on it through performances no less righteous than those from which they’re taking inspiration. There’s shred, to be sure — and it’s just as likely to come from the drums or bass as the guitar — but the whole thing is underscored by a sense of soul that makes it feel mellow and all the more natural. You can’t fake that, and way fewer acts have it than want it.

We can’t wait to see this band. Do yourself a favor and do likewise.
