GGGOLDDD to perform their Roadburn Redux commissioned project, This Shame Should Not Be Mine

GGGOLDDD made such an impression on viewers of Roadburn Redux, so much so that their spellbinding performance was the most-watched video on the site over the weekend, leaving Roadburners eager for more. We’re thrilled to be able to fulfil those desires by announcing that GGGOLDDD will reprise their commissioned performance of This Shame Should Not Be Mine at Roadburn 2022 – this time with an expanded ensemble of musicians, and in front of a real life audience.

Shortly before they set up to perform back in April, vocalist Milena Eva, revealed details of the events that had led to the creation of This Shame Should Not Be Mine. At aged 19 Milena was raped; the trauma of this event was pushed away for many years, but in the silence of 2020’s lockdown she was confronted with her past. Creating music alongside her partner Thomas Sciarone and their band members, Igor, Jaka, Danielle and Vincent provided her with an outlet to process her emotions.

The result was a dominating performance which displayed Milena’s vulnerability and power to devastating effect.  Her commanding presence was solidified by the musicians who helped craft the emotive and highly charged tracks that encompassed the heartfelt lyrics. The music itself took a turn toward synth-driven electronics; these new elements to GGGOLDDD’s sound provided an additional layer atop their more familiar guitar-led sound.

Combining the sound of GGGOLDDD that we have known and loved over the years, with additional elements and instrumentation was a big part of what made their Roadburn Redux performance so captivating. This time around the piece will be performed exclusively for Roadburn with orchestral accompaniment. The disorienting string sounds that characterize This Shame Should Not Be Mine are sure to hit us in the gut even harder when played with live instruments.

Earlier this year GGGOLDDD travelled to the UK to record This Shame Should Not Be Mine with Jaime Gomez Arellano; more details on the release of this sure-to-be ground breaking new album will become available in the months to come.

Of their performance at Roadburn 2022, the band comment: “To quote David Wojnarowicz:Transition is always a relief. Destination means death to me. If I could figure out a way to remain forever in transition, in the disconnected and unfamiliar, I could remain in a state of perpetual freedom.

“If you’ve been following us since 2012, you know that change and transformation are key to our process and art. We feel that with the release of ‘This Shame Should Not Be Mine’ we can show a whole new GGGOLDDD, yet with all the characteristics that make us us. To be able to perform this commissioned piece, now as a full grown album in front of a live audience, 1 year after its inception at Roadburn Redux and 2 years after the pandemic struck, is surely going to be cathartic. For us and hopefully for you too.”

The performance of This Shame Should Not Be Mine will form a part of Thomas and Milena’s curation at Roadburn 2022.
