Giles Corey will perform as part of The Flenser showcase at Roadburn 2020; making their European debut

In 2020, The Flenser will celebrate the tenth anniversary of the label’s first release. The San Francisco based label has been committed to releasing experimental, avant-garde music for a whole decade – which – naturally – has not escaped our notice here at Roadburn HQ. Among the bands that have a place in the histories of both Roadburn and The Flenser are pivotal artists such as Wreck & Reference, Panopticon, Planning For Burial, Bell Witch – and of course, Have A Nice Life.

To celebrate this milestone and to acknowledge the impact that The Flenser has had on our record collections and the broader musical landscape we have invited several of the label’s current artists to perform at Roadburn 2020. The umbrella of The Flenser showcase gathers together five essential artists who will help to define Roadburn 2020, and the future of this incredibly special label.

The Flenser label manager, Jonathan Tuite comments: “Roadburn is my absolute favorite festival in the world. The lineup is always diverse, the audience enthusiastic, and the curation is second to none. I can’t think of a more appropriate place for The Flenser to celebrate our ten years of existence.”

We are thrilled to announce the European debut of Giles Corey at Roadburn 2020.

For over ten years Dan Barrett has been cementing his role as a visionary in dark music history. Through self-recorded projects like his massively influential band Have a Nice Life, the “open source” black metal group, Nahvalr, and the electronic leaning Black Wing, Barrett has fostered a deep connection with listeners all over the world. Perhaps none of this work has resonated with more intimacy than Giles Corey, his acoustic guitar led, ghost noise-soaked songwriting vessel. As Have a Nice Life’s Deathconsciousness has been widely hailed as a contemporary classic, Giles Corey’s 2011 self-titled record has become a fan favorite that will echo through time.

While on paper an acoustic led-project sounds like a potentially low-key affair, Giles Corey is bursting with electric energy–recordings are awash in swirling organs, reverberating choirs, striking horns, and blown out drums. The climax of No One Is Ever Going to Want Me, with it’s devastating refrain, “I want to feel like I feel when I’m asleep,” is as earth-moving as anything Barrett has ever written. While Giles Corey has performed as a solo-act, Roadburn 2020 will mark the project’s first appearance as a full-band. Members of Have a Nice Life, including central figure Tim Macuga, will help bring the album’s haunted sounds to life: expect the stage and audience to be left in a scorched earth state of desolation.

Giles Corey will perform as part of The Flenser showcase at Roadburn 2020.
