The Austin music scene is one of the most vibrant in the United States right now—and has been for more than a decade now—producing a legion of daring heavy bands. Post-everything trio Glassing are one of those bands, but they exist in a class of their own.
Developing a sound that consistently skirts easy classification, Glassing’s fourth and newest album From the Other Side of the Mirror is a sharp-edged orgy of post-metal, post-hardcore, screamo, black metal and lush shoegaze. This sense of composition makes Glassing’s recordings feel almost cinematic; bursts of extremity are bookended by pulsing synthesizers, quiet guitars and tightly-coiled doom metal. Bass/vocalist Dustin Coffman alternates between a clean singing voice and melancholic vocals that recall Hum more than the scathing metal they’re often found near.
The five years since Glassing’s breakthrough album, Spotted Horse, have been an eternity in many ways; the world is much different while also staying much the same, but the post-everything outfit have pushed themselves in that time to grow and present themselves, taking significant leaps on each new release after.
It’s this natural affinity for meshing styles and making something new out of heavily-trodden sonic territory that makes Glassing so exciting. Fresh off their first European run earlier in 2024, Glassing have been on Roadburn’s radar for a while now and their set is sure to have something for everyone in attendance, because that is what Glassing does best.
Of their upcoming Roadburn appearance, the band commented: “It’s been cool to see Roadburn become basically a conservator of art on the fringes. The fest’s legacy is unparalleled, and we’ve admired how Walter and Becky have organically cultivated this subculture of ours to help redefine what dark and heavy music stands for. We’ve been allured by that cathartic and purgative nature that Roadburn leans into, so it’s a total privilege to be included in the fest and contribute our small part of that bigger picture “
