Our 2020 curator, James Kent AKA Perturbator is set to join forces with Cult of Luna’s Johannes Persson for a commissioned performance

2020 marks the third edition of Roadburn during which we will host specially commissioned pieces of music making their worldwide debut. Already, Roadburn’s commissioned projects have spawned ambitious, life affirming, bone-trembling ensembles that exceeded our expectations and wildest dreams. 2020 is shaping up to continue where we left off, with yet more innovative and exhilarating collaborations…

Our 2020 curator, James Kent AKA Perturbator is set to join forces with Cult of Luna’s Johannes Persson for a commissioned performance that will form something of a grand centre-piece for Roadburn, and in turn – James’s curation.

An organic pairing has morphed and mutated to a point where they will be combining forces on the 013 main stage next year. Having met in Sweden in early 2019, the pair hit it off and were soon exchanging thoughts and ideas about the music that inspired and excited them. Their open-mindedness in relation to creativity and composition is well documented in their individual back catalogues, and for the first time we’ll witness what their combined efforts will look, sound and feel like, come April 2020.

James comments: “I remember seeing Cult of Luna twice during their Vertikal tour, and was both fascinated and inspired by the way they build mood and atmosphere during the actual performance. The different variations on the same melodies and the way they added layers upon layers of sound made for a very unique and memorable concert experience.”

That hypnotic build of atmosphere and layering is likely to feature heavily during the performance; cinematic ambiance and enveloping emotional soundscapes are coded into their DNA.

Whilst they’re staying relatively tightlipped about what we can expect from the end result, they have mapped out a pathway to the performance and no doubt it will evolve continuously over the coming eight months. If they throw scraps our way, we’ll gladly take them to further fuel our imaginations, but even without, our minds are whirring at the possibilities and potential for the eventual emission from these two innovative individuals.
