COMMISSIONED: Jo Quail performing The Cartographer

Jo Quail performing The Cartographer is the only commissioned piece from 2020’s Roadburn line up to be carried over into 2021. It feels like a lifetime ago when we approached her, having been enthralled by her guest spots with At The Gates, MONO and Myrkur at Roadburn 2019, but our enthusiasm for what she has crafted hasn’t been dimmed by the additional 12 month wait.

Jo’s intention is to explore heaviness (something – you may have noticed – we’re rather keen on ourselves), and to focus on exploring the juxtaposition between classical and more contemporary music, in this case post-metal. “Arguably heaviness is an emotional concept, reaching far beyond the confines of volume, speed and instrumentation,” Jo told us, back in 2019.

Without lyrics to direct the listener towards meaning, much more is left to interpretation in instrumental music; composers and performers alike must find other ways to convey intention. Jo will join forces with Rotterdam’s highly regarded New Trombone Collective – a group of trombonists who pride themselves on innovation, creativity and collaboration – to work towards communicating specific feelings through their combined output.

Five interlinking sections of music will be performed, each one a missive of intent. We can expect much of the tension and release, the big builds, and the emotional crescendos often found in post metal, performed on classical instruments. The musicians will also employ compositional effects that create the aural illusion of delay and reverb, tools not often employed in more traditional classical compositions or performances. Whatever you think this may sound like – we encourage you to leave your preconceptions at the door; this has all the indicators of a mind-bending, immersive Roadburn experience – we can spot them a mile off; we’ve seen a few.

Join us as – finally – we get to witness the debut performance of The Cartographer by Jo Quail at Roadburn Redux.

Jo Quail performing The Cartographer will be part of Roadburn Redux, taking place between April 16-18.
