Having just released his solo album The Rupturing Sowle, Johan G. Winther will be presenting a short film at Roadburn Redux entitled Permanent Sojourner, that examines the profound relationship between the artist and their creative space.

You may know Johan from his work with post-rockers Barrens, or with blackened hardcore band Blessings, who will also be appearing as part of Roadburn’s Pelagic showcase – but his instrumental solo work is a more intimate exploration. He composed The Rupturing Sowle in a small cabin in the Swedish forest, creating it in total isolation long before Covid forced others to create in a similar manner. His rich weavings of introspective folk capture the duality of the human soul through a concoction of contrasts – light and dark, sadness and joy, acoustic and electric.

The cabin was integral in the creation of The Rupturing Sowle. It adorns the record’s cover, and was a place of both inspiration and comfort for Johan. The cabin and the natural world surrounding it also seeped into the music – sounds like the creaks of the floorboards, the crackle of the open fire and the birdsong outside were all captured on the recording, and became like characters in the narrative that Johan had created. It is fitting, then, that this location will feature prominently in Johan’s short film Permanent Sojourner, presented exclusively for Roadburn Redux.

Johan says: “Permanent Sojourner is a portrait of the intimate connection between artist and studio, and the inspiration and work that arise from it.”

Johan G. Winther will perform as part of Pelagic Presents at Roadburn Redux, between April 16-18.
