EXCLUSIVE SETS: Jonathan Hultén a set of set of re-envisioned, minimalistic songs from Chants From Another Place

After 16 years as the guitarist in Swedish purveyors of dramatic gothic gloom Tribulation, Jonathan Hultén announced last December that he was leaving the band to focus fully on his solo work. His debut solo album, Chants From Another Place, could not be more aptly named, and while it steers towards the eerie not unlike Tribulation, it takes the listener on a completely different kind of journey.

Flowing with stripped-back sonics that are drawn from acapella folk and church choir compositions, Chants From Another Place weaves an entrancing expedition through 12 deeply introspective songs inspired by Hulten’s own artistic and spiritual journey. Gliding from gorgeous harmonies and softly plucked guitars (The Mountain) to ghostly piano (The Fleeting World), the album marks Hultén as a master of dark folk.

Hultén has played Roadburn before – first in 2014 with Tribulation, and again in 2018 under his solo project, when he had one EP to his name, 2017’s enthralling The Dark Night Of The Soul. Now he’s back for Roadburn Redux to perform an online set of re-envisioned, minimalistic songs from Chants From Another Place.

Hultén says, “I’m excited to be performing at Roadburn again, this time with a short film created by my friends Jakob Johansson, Maria Larsson and myself. We call it “Ghosts and Memories of a Dead Forest”. The audio is mixed and mastered by Ola Ersfjord. We hope you will enjoy it!”
