Messa present new album, Close, at Roadburn

If you’ve been jamming the new track from Messa over the last couple of weeks, you’ll already have an inkling as to why we’ve invited them back to Roadburn. The single, Pilgrim, is taken from their upcoming new album, Close, and gives a good indication of what to expect from this most exciting of bands. We saw their potential when they performed at the festival back in 2018 and to see their ambitious ideas coming to fruition on Close is a great feeling. We have invited them to the main stage to perform a special set featuring songs from the new album, alongside a unique constellation of musicians and instruments that help give Close its distinctive sound.

Of their Roadburn set the band say:

Our appearance at Roadburn 2022 will see us perform a specially dedicated and one of a kind set. We’ll play songs from our new record “CLOSE” with a unique line-up that will include other fellow musicians within our project. Our aim with Messa’s performance is to embrace a musical wandering that will allow all of us – on and off stage – to drift away into another place. We can’t wait to be on Roadburn’s stage again and we are very excited to be part of this edition.”

Seeming to both embrace and defy everything it means to be a metal band, Messa mesh Mediterranean sounds with crushing doom riffs that are as good as any cranked out over the past few decades. With an emphasis on atmosphere, Messa has something magical about them that transcends easy explanation. What we can say with confidence though, is that they’ve bloomed into one of the leading lights in the Italian underground, and their future looks extremely bright indeed.
