40 Watt Sun and Patrick Walker will perform at Roadburn 2020 as part of Emma Ruth Rundle’s curation, The Gilded Cage

Back in 2016, Emma Ruth Rundle uploaded a cover of 40 Watt Sun’s Carry Me Home to Youtube. The lo-fi recording echoed the sombre tone of the original, and gave a considerable clue to how much Emma loved 40 Watt Sun, and in particular, the 2011 album, The Inside Room. Therefore, it was no surprise that when we first discussed her curation with her, Patrick Walker’s name was among the first to be mentioned.

We’ve hosted 40 Watt Sun at previous editions of Roadburn (2012, 2014), but since then, the band has undergone distinct metamorphoses. Patrick remains at the core of the band, with his distinctive voice reverberating around the confines of their acclaimed 2016 album, Wider Than The Sky. As we type, he is at work; moulding and shaping the next phase of 40 Watt Sun, with the promise of new material on the horizon.

As we have caught him in something of a transitional phase, we have invited him to perform two sets at Roadburn 2020 – one that acknowledges the past of 40 Watt Sun, and one that looks firmly to the future. To Emma’s joy, Patrick has agreed to perform The Inside Room in its entirety with a full band (including a second guitarist), as well as a ‘solo’ set that will include as yet unreleased tracks – enhanced by the addition of guest musicians.

Emma comments: “There’s no musician alive on this planet who has such a deep and ongoing grip on my heart as Patrick does. I don’t have enough language to express how deeply affecting his work is. I literally had to excuse myself the last time I saw him perform as I couldn’t stop sobbing! Ha. It sounds dramatic but it’s true.

“The record The Inside Room is especially meaningful to me and we are all going to be lucky enough to see it performed live in its entirety by 40 Watt Sun. Every moment of this record is perfect, heartbreaking and potent. I still listen to it every week (I was listening to it everyday for a few years). Patrick will also give a separate performance which will feature some of his more recent compositions. These two sets are not to be missed.”

Understated, evocative and sincere, the music of 40 Watt Sun has already left a mark on many Roadburners. With these two sets, Patrick Walker will demonstrate that whilst the past holds many riches, the future also promises great rewards.
