Red Sparowes will be reuniting for Roadburn 2020 for an exclusive performance as part of Emma Ruth Rundle's curated event, The Gilded Cage

Red Sparowes have been on hiatus since 2011. Their component parts scattered in the wind, occasionally bumping into each other, collaboratively, musically or otherwise. Each piece of the Red Sparowes puzzle has their own tale to tell of where the intervening years have taken them, but we can give you a spoiler right now: all roads lead to Roadburn.

Twelve and a half years ago Red Sparowes played Roadburn, and we’re thrilled to report that thirteen years later they will step back on to a Roadburn stage courtesy of the curation of their guitarist, Emma Ruth Rundle. Performing as part of her ‘The Gilded Cage’ event that takes place across the festival weekend, Red Sparowes will make a long awaited return to the live arena.

A lot has changed in those thirteen years – it’s time enough that many Roadburners will have never had the chance to see Red Sparowes live, although there’s a good chance that they may have seen something Sparowes-adjacent. Aside from Emma Ruth Rundle herself, members have been part of Isis, Marriages, Psalms and more.

Renowned for their long song titles, Red Sparowes delivered consistently brilliant chunks of post-rock/metal emotion-laden soundscapes, drawing to an intense close with 2010’s The Fear Is Excruciating, But Therein Lies The Answer. Over the course of three full lengths and one EP, memories were made, emotions were traversed, and a stunning body of work was created.

Greg Burns comments:
“After a long hiatus, we have decided to get Red Sparowes back on the stage. I can’t imagine a better way to return than by playing what has always been one of our favorite festivals. Our past performances at Roadburn are among our collective favorite shows, not only because of the incredible line-ups, but because of the Roadburn culture – one firmly grounded in a love for underground music and the drive to create an atmosphere that eliminates the silos between bands and audience. We are honored to be back.”

Emma adds:
“It is with great joy that I am able to announce that after a ten year hiatus, Red Sparowes will be reuniting for Roadburn 2020 for an exclusive performance. It’s a huge honor to resurrect the band that really brought me into the fold of the Roadburn family.”

A selection of tracks from their back catalog will be handpicked for presentation at Roadburn 2020; a true homecoming for some of post-rock’s most revered musicians.
