Sólstafir return to Roadburn to perform Svartir Sandar in its entirety

If you’re already anticipating the thrill of being back in Tilburg, walking into the 013 and feeling like you’re at home, then we have great news for you! Waiting for you there will be Sólstafir – performing their 2011 album, Svartir Sandar in full. Celebrating the tenth anniversary of this groundbreaking album in style, we can’t wait to welcome back some of our favourite Icelandic friends.

Divided into two halves, the album captures all that was – and remains – great about the band. Although almost a decade has past, defining what is contained on the album remains a challenge; there are elements of post-rock, some murky depths that can only be labelled as sludgy, and soaring atmospherics that have drawn comparisons to Sigur Rós. By the time Svartir Sandar was released, Sólstafir may have left behind their black metal roots, but at times this album could barely be regarded as metal at all.  Regardless of genre or clumsy attempts to pin a label on the music contained within, Svartir Sandar is a definitively Sólstafir-sounding album – and that’s why it still resonates with us years later.

The band comment: “It’s been 10 years since we released Svartir Sandar. We can think of no better way to commemorate this, by playing it live in its entirety at Roadburn 2022”

We’re thrilled to not only welcome them back to Roadburn – it will have been six years since they last performed – but to also revisit this cherished part of their history together. To share an album as expansive and emotional as this with our friends, both on and off stage, after such a long absence from each others’ company – well, the anticipation has already ramped up a notch or two since we started typing this.
