Roadburn: Essential Sounds 20.7.18

July 20, 2018

Whilst we enormously enjoy sharing with you the new music that we discover on a weekly basis, from time to time it’s nice to mix it up a little bit. Buoyed by World Cup fever, a few weeks back we committed to creating a playlist of tracks that originated from the winning country.  We’re terribly sorry that Uruguay missed out on World Cup glory, and it’s a shame that Croatia got pipped at the post, but in all honesty, we breathed a sigh of relief when France took home the trophy.

It was a joy to go through the options that France presented in terms of music for this playlist. It’s not all brand new bands and songs, but they’re all fitting for a Roadburn-related playlist. The options were rich pickings, with many genres represented. Here’s a selection of French and France-related artists for our latest Roadburn: Essential Sounds playlist. Amusez-vous!

Roadburn: Essential Sounds 13.7.18

July 13, 2018

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, Kraut Rock is still as vibrant and highly influential as it was back in the late ’60s and early ’70s. German bands like Can, Neu!, Kraftwerk, Guru Guru, Cluster, and Tangerine Dream among others broke new musical ground as an expression of a desire for freedom.

Their experimental presence can still be heard and felt today through a wide array of Kraut Rock-influenced bands keeping the legacy alive – from Pharaoh Overlord to King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, from Kikagaku Moyo to Minami Deutsch and from Beak> to Ulan Bator and Nordra. This week’s playlist offers 11 deep cuts, showcasing bands that operate under the modern umbrella of Kraut Rock as a tribute to the much lauded originators.

Roadburn: Essential Sounds 29.6.18

June 29, 2018

We’re a month deep into these Roadburn: Essential Sounds playlists now – and we hope you’re enjoying listening to them as much as we are enjoying putting them together.

Of course each week the contents of the playlist are documented here on the Roadburn site, in posts like this one, but we were impressed and humbled to find that a Roadburner, Ika, has been archiving every song we add to the playlists in one mega-playlist. You can check it out HERE.

But back to this week…

We kick off the playlist with a new track from Emma Ruth Rundle, a favourite at Roadburn HQ! Her 2017 set in the Green Room was so captivating and emotional that it turned out to be one of the cornerstone performances of the whole festival; one that embodied heaviness in an unconventional and unexpected way. We’re so thrilled that Emma will have a new album in September, if the first track is anything to go by, it will be another soul searching future classic.

A connection runs from Emma through to co-collaborators Jaye Jayle and into Young Widows; a thread woven of both love and unbridled creativity.

We had to have a last minute switcheroo when Converge dropped their latest release on us by surprise today! We couldn’t not include a track from the blistering Beautiful Ruin, and we strongly recommend you check out the full EP. Very much a band that do things on their own terms and at their own pace, we’ve gotta say the speed with which their rolling out new material lately suits us just fine.

If you’d prefer to seek out the contents of the playlist elsewhere, here’s the info you need:

Emma Ruth Rundle – Fever Dreams (Sargent House)

Deafheaven – Canary Yellow (Anti Records)

Young Widows – The Money (Temporary Residence)

Jaye Jayle –As Soon As Night (Sargent House)

Sear Bliss – Shroud (Hammerheart Records)

Kły – Jeżeli (Pagan Records)

Witte Wieven – Silhouettes of an Imprisoned Mind (Self release)

Kristoffer Lo – Front Row Gallows View (Propeller Recordings)

Wax Chattels – Career (Captured Tracks)

KEN Mode – Doesn’t Feel Pain Like He Should (Season of Mist)

Converge – Churches & Jails (Epitaph/Deathwish)

Whilst we’re still enjoying our vacation from Roadburn HQ (still separately, though united by our ability to befriend foreign cats), we have our trusted contributors taking care of playlist duties.

Starting off with Brazil’s underground heroes, Deaf Kids, who are currently taking Europe by storm, we can only hope summer’s here to stay!

Cave In's (ft. Stephen Brodsky & Adam McGrath) Tribute to Caleb Scofield Posted On Line

June 18, 2018

We were honoured to facilitate this tribute to Caleb Scofield at Roadburn 2018; Stephen Brodsky and Adam McGrath celebrated the life of their Cave In bandmate amongst friends with us.

Thanks to Visual Violence the event was captured and edited together so we can relive this special occasion below.

If you’d like to donate to the Scofield family, you can do so HERE.

Roadburn Essential Sounds 15.6.18 (by Tomas Lindberg)

June 15, 2018

When we realised that we needed someone to take charge of our weekly playlist due to coinciding vacations, we knew there were several people we could turn to for help. One that stand out for his insatiable appetite for new music would be perfect, someone who can present a little slice of their current audio passions with the same love and attention to detail that we put into the playlists. So, we asked Tomas Lindberg to step in this week.

He’s known to most as the frontman for At The Gates and Disfear, but also known to some as the enthusiastic Swedish man who is down the front, banging his head and raising his fists at many a Roadburn performance.

So, without further ado, here is a list of Tompa’s current top tunes.

Uran – Emp (Höga Nord Rekords)

Henrik Palm – Missoula (Fetish Records)

Craft – Darkness Falls (Season Of Mist)

Black Salvation – In a Casket’s Ride (Relapse Records)

The Skull Defekts – A Brief History Of Rhythm, Dub, Life And Death (Thrill Jockey)

Robocobra Quartet – Short Stretch Of Day (Abbreviated Records)

Revevorum Ib Malacht – Where Escapism Ends (AnnapurnA)

Dungen & Woods – Loop (Kemado Records)

Agrimonia – A World Unseen (Southern Lord)

The Excorsist – Pusher (Höga Nord Rekords)

June 8, 2018

We’re thrilled that the Essential Sounds playlist is already at almost 400 subscribers; we hope you enjoyed the first week’s playlist! If you’re yet to subscribe, please click through and do so! We’ll continue to bring you new playlists every week with songs that are inspiring us, brand new releases and a smattering of old favourites.

This week kicks off with some Septic Tank savagery – and gives us the perfect opportunity to wish a (belated) happy birthday to close friend of Roadburn, Lee Dorrian, who turned 50 this past week!

Also included are tracks by Thou (who have recently announced a whole bunch of new releases), Nothing (who graced us with their presence at Roadburn back in 2014), Mirror Queen (who are showing us a whole new side to themselves), and of course the irrepressible Ghost!  It was seven years ago that Ghost stepped on to a Roadburn stage and a lot has happened in that time!

Roadburn: Essential Sounds 1.6.18

June 1, 2018

Each week, we’ll collate a playlist of songs that we’re listening to at Roadburn HQ and put them into playlist form via Spotify. Not all the songs will be new, not all of them will be from artists that have played Roadburn or will in the future; consider it a glimpse into what’s inspiring us right now.

If you like what you hear, please subscribe to the playlist – we’ll be updating it regularly! Click here or see below to check out the inaugural Roadburn: Essential Sounds playlist.

Our first ever Roadburn: Essential Sounds play list kicks off with Soft Kill – a track taken from their recently released album, Savior. Swiftly following is Our Raw Heart – a new track from Yob, which will appear on their new album of the same name, which is due out a week today. Welcome back Yob!
