Celebrating its 50th anniversary, Kraut Rock is still as vibrant and highly influential as it was back in the late ’60s and early ’70s. German bands like Can, Neu!, Kraftwerk, Guru Guru, Cluster, and Tangerine Dream among others broke new musical ground as an expression of a desire for freedom.
Their experimental presence can still be heard and felt today through a wide array of Kraut Rock-influenced bands keeping the legacy alive – from Pharaoh Overlord to King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, from Kikagaku Moyo to Minami Deutsch and from Beak> to Ulan Bator and Nordra. This week’s playlist offers 11 deep cuts, showcasing bands that operate under the modern umbrella of Kraut Rock as a tribute to the much lauded originators.
