Composer and multi-instrumentalist Toby Driver is no stranger to us here at Roadburn, and he will play two sets that book-end the festival, one on Thursday with his project Alora Crucible, and a second on Sunday simply as Toby Driver. It is this set that he will perform under his own name that we’re here to dig into here. To read more about his Alora Crucible set, please click here.
Over two decades, Toby Driver has amassed an impressive body of work – as a solo artist and as part of bands such as Kayo Dot and maudlin of the well. He is a prolific collaborator too, tuning his ear to the offerings of others to better enhance his overall creations. For this ‘solo’ set at Roadburn, Toby will in fact be joined by a number of musicians to accompany him as he walks down the dark paths that weave through his solo material.
Raven, I Know That You Can Give Me Anything is Toby’s latest full-length missive, a collection of ballads that are stark in their gentle openness, yet still remain lush and voluminous in a way that Toby excels at. Even when joined by others, there is a vulnerability to Toby’s performance that means that the rawness of a singer-songwriter baring his soul remains central to the delivery..
Toby told us:
“Receiving an invitation to perform at Roadburn is a profound honor and affirmation, and I’m overjoyed to have the opportunity to present these two distinct but connected spirits from my multifaceted body of work and to share my scars of transfiguration and descent with one of the world’s best communities atone of the world’s coolest festivals!”
