Emma Ruth Rundle will release her new album, These Killing Times, next month. Maybe you’ve already heard the two singles she’s released from it, but trust us when we say that the whole thing is an incredible artistic step forward for her. In contrast to the intimate and often minimalist Engine of Hell, These Killing Times brings full-band instrumentation back to the forefront – lush arrangements and an intricate tapestry of sound. We were so enamoured by the album as a whole, we have invited Emma to Roadburn 2027 to perform it in its entirety.
For this full-band performance, Emma’s comrades on stage comprise Gina Gleason (Baroness) and Amelia Baker (Cinder Well) on guitar, Julie Slick on bass, and Jess Gowrie (Chelsea Wolfe) on drums. Jess, Amelia and Gina were among the many friends and contributors who added elements of their craft to the studio recording of These Killing Times. Being in community was a significant driving force behind the album’s creation, an act that extends into the live presentation of the songs. The formidable line-up will bring to life Emma’s latest work – from the gentle and heartfelt to the raucous and defiant.

Roadburn’s connection to Emma’s dates back over a decade – her first set being with Marriages at the tiny venue, Cul-de-Sac, and her most recent being on the main stage in 2022 where she enraptured a pin-drop silent crowd of 3,000 for the best part of an hour. That performance has been immortalised on her Live at Roadburn record, but many in attendance – us included – can recall the spine-tingling show without requiring prompting from the record player. It is our honour to continue this lineage of performances with the latest work in her canon.
