Mutoid Man will be breaking the law at Roadburn Festival

Give Mutoid Man’s latest opus, War Moans, a spin and you’ll witness the sound of three skilful musicians shaking loose, rooting around in the music that shaped them, and coming up with something that is much more than the sum of its parts. Mutoid Man itself is also much more than the sum of its parts; a band comprised of Ben Koller, Stephen Brodsky and Nick Cageao, who between them have quite the formidable musical curriculum vitae.

Whilst this trio is undoubtedly a band that like to have fun – both on stage and in the studio – it doesn’t distract from their ability to put together tracks that showcase their considerable talents. Their knack for getting heads banging and feet tappin’ whilst they rip it up on stage is unparalleled. “Mutoid Man is a metal band with a punk attitude,” guitarist and singer Stephen Brodsky explains, a statement that captures the essence of the band to a tee.

It’s not so much a supergroup, and to call it a side project doesn’t quite do it justice, so perhaps thinking of Mutoid Man as law unto itself is the way forward. You’ll catch a whiff of a Cave In-esque melody here, or a Converge-worthy blast there, but Mutoid Man remains its own beast – and not one we’re up for trying to tame.

Mutoid Man will be breaking the law at Roadburn Festival on Friday, April 20.
