Those amongst us who find themselves frequently despairing at the state of the world may well find themselves drawn to the work of Antropoceno. The name under which Brazilian producer Lua Viana creates music is a nod towards the philosophical thinking that has informed their work. To put it in simple terms, anthropocentric thinking is what got us into this mess and finding our way back to the earth may be the only thing that saves us.
Through traditional Brazilian rhythms and embracing experimental rock and metal sounds, Lua has turned Antropoceno into a conduit for her anti-colonial stance, her rejection of nature being merely a resource, and a deeply felt belief that reconnecting to ancient – and timeless – rituals is the way to secure a future. Due in no small part to the subject matter, the music possesses an urgency that is teeming with resilience and more than a little hope.
Lua comments: “We’re so excited to play at Roadburn! Having a European tour by itself is a dream coming true, but it’s even better to have the opportunity to play at a festival that’s open to the environmentalist message and the multicultural fusion approach that comes with Antropoceno experimentations. It’s so important to have intercultural contact based on alterity and respect. I can’t wait to play Brazilian rhythms in Roadburn and show to our fans in Europe how the legacy of the Anthropophagic Movement can be felt to this day in all Latin America, and how rich and multifaceted our culture is.”
Antropoceno’s latest album, No Ritmo da Terra (In Rhythm with the Earth) is the second part of a trilogy; it is inspired by Ailton Krenak and deconstructs the impact of human-centric beliefs as a dominant force. Having branched out into live performances, the live iteration of Antropoceno approaches these compositions with an open-mind and flexibility. Their first foray into Europe will come in Spring 2027 and we’re thrilled that Roadburn will be on the itinerary, where they will play the much praised No Ritmo da Terra in full.. Join us in welcoming Antropoceno to Roadburn.
